Thorsten Röttgers

Diversity and creativity are the daily accompanists of Thorsten Röttgers, 33, structural engineer for steel structures and static at ThyssenKrupp Fördertechnik GmbH in Essen. Be it the reconstruction of a great bucket wheel excavator, project planning of a large-scale power plant or dimensioning of steel construction components.

After his entry in July 2008 his first project directed him straight to giant equipment- the bucket wheel excavator 285 one of the biggest/largest of his kind at the open pit Garzweiler. During the excavators operating time of over 30 years he sustained damages that had to be redeveloped urgently so the bucket wheel excavator can work for another years. To replace the supporting structure under load in parts seemed to be risky unless impossible. But the use of various analysis and latest computational procedures helped to prove that the intended measures could be taken.

“These equipments are amazing impressive, one of the most fascinating parts of world’s technique” to Thorsten these equipment is high-technique that even in 30 years after initiation will reflect high art of engineering and never loosed their fascination. The interdisciplinary teamwork is thereby of critical importance to him. This experience he made not at least planning a large-scale power plant. “Not until every member of the team inserts his/her energy and knowledge, the whole thing is complete”, says Thorsten not without pride.

“Achieved the impossible- that is our business, now and in future”- this was not at least impressive proved by the return to service of the bucket wheel excavator 285 after successful reconstruction in summer 2009.
